Katana (刀) Uda School

Mid Muromachi Period (15th Century)

This Katana is attributed to the Uda school. A long blade with a balanced width and thickness. The Itame-Hada Masanagare of the Jigane is well grained with a darkish textured Shirake-Utsuri Jitetsu. The Nie-Deki Gonome-Midare with Ko-Gunome-Midare on the Hamon, mixed with Sunagashi Kinsuji is well balanced. The Boshii (sword tip) is Midarekomi style.

A black lacquered Roiro Saya matches the blade. The open engraved work of the round-shaped iron Tsuba seems to be a sunlight design.

The Uda school is considered to have been founded by Kunimitsu (国光) in the Kamakura Period and continued working until the Edo Period. Swords from Kamakura to Nanbokucho are the so-called Kouda. From the Muromachi Period on, swords have been called Uda.

The example we have here is most likely made around from the early Muromachi period to the middle of the Muromachi period (14th/15th Century). It has the style of Hokkoku (Northern province), because of the dark texture appearing the Chikei. (NBTHK Hozon Paper)
